The Family Jewels
Inspiration: The Family Jewels concept is inspired by a Marina and the Diamonds song. Song title identified as “Hit by family jewels” — Ellie says “I always thought it was falling down.” Childhood memory: “when I was like five and six, I used to slide around the kitchen floor in my socks singing along to the song.”
The Family Jewels are literally jewels. There is a chain. Named chain members listed in order: Ruby, Amethyst, Diamond, Pearl — “and a bunch of others.” The chain then repeats. Being “first in the chain” does NOT mean being the oldest. Ruby was “the first in the chain” and also the first gem to have something — the sentence was cut off before completion.
The youngest of all the jewels are sent to a nursery.
Formation / birth: “They don’t give birth. They get formed.” Two jewels go into a “little pod” together; Ruby and Pearl were in the same pod. “They hatch out of that pod.” Being in the same pod is how they become sisters.
